Causing serious injury by careless or inconsiderate driving

25 July 2022

Driving for work has become a whole lot riskier. Effective from 28 June 2022, the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Act 2022 has been revised to include a range of road traffic measures and increased penalties.

To ensure drivers are fully aware of this change and to remind them of their responsibilities, this is the subject of our July Toolbox Talk.

The Toolbox Talk covers the increased penalties drivers now face as result of causing:

  • Serious injury by careless or inconsiderate driving
  • Death by careless driving when under the influence of drink or drugs
  • Death by dangerous driving

The change means drivers face up to two years prison and a 12-month driving ban for causing serious injury by careless or inconsiderate driving. However, causing death by dangerous driving or death by careless driving when under the influence of drink or drugs can now result in life imprisonment. Simply tuning the radio, checking paperwork or tailgating the vehicle in front could have a life changing impact.

Ensure your drivers are fully up to date with these new sentencing rules.
