The height of a HGV or PCV is one of the most important pieces of information a driver must know. There are five bridge strikes a day on average and Network Rail has found that 32% of drivers admitted to not being aware of the height of their vehicle. The height measuring pole is the most common tool to establish the height of a vehicle but it must be used correctly to determine an accurate safe travelling height.
There is no common industry procedure in place for measuring vehicle height and no equipment instructions on the correct use of height measuring poles. Alongside this there is a genuine lack of awareness of the 2 inch (50mm) tolerance rule. To help raise awareness, we have made this Toolbox Talk available as a free download in PDF format.
