Safe speed

17 November 2023

The theme for this year’s Brake Road Safety Week campaign is ‘Let’s talk about SPEED’. The impact of speeding can be devastating and the difference of a few miles per hour can mean the difference between life and death. Also, many collisions happen whilst driving within the speed limit, but too fast for the road or weather conditions.

Speed is the biggest single killer on UK roads and to ensure we are aligned to the single-issue messaging of National Road Safety Week the subject of our November Toolbox Talk is Safe Speed.

The Toolbox Talk reminds drivers of the road and traffic conditions where speed needs to be considered and covers:

  • National speed limits on all road types for all vehicles including Scottish variations
  • Restricted speed limits in built up areas including 20mph urban speed limit in Wales and cities across the UK
  • Speed considerations in a range of conditions including adverse weather, night driving and roadworks
  • The moral and legal consequences of speeding including videos from the national THINK! campaign

The speed limit for the road or the vehicle is the absolute maximum speed anyone should travel at. However, it doesn’t mean it’s safe to drive at that speed irrespective of conditions. The impact of speeding can be devastating and the difference of a few miles per hour can mean the difference between life and death.
