We’ve had a few queries from customers recently regarding the announcement of the revision to The Highway Code and thought it might be helpful to share our view on what’s happening.We’ve had a few queries from customers recently regarding the announcement of the revision to The Highway Code and thought it might be helpful to share our view on what’s happening.

In July, the DfT announced The Highway Code will be revised adter the consultation that took place last year. There are three main proposed changes:

  1. Introduce a hierarchy of road users
  2. Clarify the rules on pedestrian priority
  3. Establish guidance for overtaking cyclists and horse riders

What’s next?

The next steps are for the DfT to:

  • Finalise the revisions to The Highway Code
  • Submit to Parliament for approval (40 days)
  • Update and publish both online and hard copy versions

What are we doing?

Did you know the current hard copy of The Highway Code was published in 2015? Since then there have been 16 online updates, the latest was in March 2021 reflecting the new rules for old tyres on large vehicles.

The Driver Handbook keeps up-to-date with The Highway Code, making sure your drivers have access to the latest information. The current linked edition in The Driver Handbook app is dated March 2021 and as soon as the new edition of The Highway Code is published we’ll update the app content, issue out a toolbox talk and keep our customers informed.
